Dorothy M. Shanahan, 84, a resident of Memorial Hospital of Dodge County annex, formerly of 950 N. Union St. The Rev. James Fitzgerald will officiate.

Mrs. Shanahan died Wednesday evening at the annex. She was born Jan. 1, 1891, in Prague. She married John M.

Shanahan Nov. 24, 1915, at Prague. The couple farmed south of Morse Bluffs until 1962, when they moved to Fremont. Her husband died July 3, 1970. Mrs.

Shanahan was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church. Survivors include a son. Jack, Grand Island; daughters, Mrs. George (Gertrude) Haidley, Fremont; Mrs.

Martin (Dorothy) Otis and Mrs. Clara Costa, both of Walnut Creek, and Mrs. Marvin (Loretta) McClain, Sacramento, brother, John Ladenburger, Prague; sisters, Mrs. Josephine Shanahan, Fremont; and Mrs. Thomas (Tillie) Shanahan, Valparaiso; 21 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren.

Rosary will be at 8 tonight at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. A memorial has been established for St. Patricks church building fund. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Monday at Spear Funeral Home in Scribner for Mrs. Elfneda Gerwick, 80, of Scribner. The Rev. Wayne Barthel will officiate. She died Thursday at a North Bend nursing home.

Mrs. Gerwick was born May 15, 1894, on a farm near Scribner. She was a member of the Legibn Club for 30 years. Mrs. Gerwick married George Gerwick Sept.

24, 1919, at Snyder. Survivors include a son, Willis, Scribner; sister, Miss Audrey Gerwick, Weeping Water; brother, Fred Bielke, California; sister, Mrs. Emma Hall, Davenport, Iowa; and three grandchildren. Burial will be in Scribner Cemetery. Herman SCHUYLER The Rev.

Victor E. Herman, pastor of St. Marys Catholic Churches in Schuyler and Wilson the last 40 years, died in a Schuyler hospital after a lengthy illness. Services will be 10:30 a m. Monday at St.

Marys Catholic Church in Schuyler. The Rev. Daniel E. Sheehan of Omaha will officiate. The Rev.

Herman was born Dec. 17, 1904, in Czechos Whisloiv joins ranks of towns in bicentennial WINSLOW The town of Winslow has become the eighth Dodge County Community receive recognition as a national bicentennial community, according to Mrs. Chris Blumm of Scribner, Dodge County bicentennial chairman. Mrs. Blumm said Winslow is the 298th community in Nebraska to receive the honor.

She said Dodge County itself is listed as a bicentennial community. Mrs. Blumm said that since becoming a bicentennial community, anyone in Dodge County is allowed to fly a bicentennial flag. Probation given Connie M. Groghan, 21, 238 W.

Fourth was placed on one year probation in Dodge Cpunty Court for assault and battery. She also was ordered to1 pay $8 court costs. Honorary pallbearers will be trustees of St. Marys churches. They are Richard Folda, Lumir Ehrenberger, Emil Jedlicka, and Loise Sedlak. Burial will be in St. Boneventure Cemetery in Columbus.

Kucera-Rozanek Funeral Home in Schuyler is in charge of arrangements. Johns HOWELLS Services for George P. Johns, 69, were held at the Westmmster Presbyterian Church in Decatur, 111. Burial was in the Macon County Memorial Park. Johns was bom in Howells in 1906.

He married Betsy Ross Morton in 1933. The couple lived in Howells until 1939 when they moved to Decatur, 111. Survivors include his widow, Decatur, sons, Peter, Mount Zion, 111., Tom, Lexington, and Christopher, Decatur, 111. brother, Paul, Omaha; sisters, Mrs. Clara Luxa, Schuyler, Sister Blanda Johns, Omaha; and grandchildren.

Mitchell Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Bader-Rozanek-Lawson Colonial Funeral Chapel for Mrs. Bessie Gibbs Mitchell, 81, of Omaha, formerly of Fremont. Mrs. Mitchell died Thursday at her home at 1540 N.

72nd St. in Omaha. She was born March 7, 1894, in Wisconsin. She moved to Omaha 18 years ago after living in Fremont. She was married to Arthur Gibbs.

After he died she married Walter Mitchell. He also is dead. Servivors include a son, Wesley Gibbs of Omaha; daughter, Mrs. Orville (Mane) Hammond of Fremont; sister, Mrs. Blanche Grover of California; brothers, Bill Fox of Fremont, Clarence Fox of Greeley, and Harold Fox of Arizona; 17 grandchildren; and 29 great-grand children.

Not many schools in Nebraska have the same system used in Valley, but Stiefel thinks the program will spread to other schools.

You can do more things with the personnel you have. You get more for your tax dollar. In other systems the teacher does not have adequate resources to draw from. "The process needs more resource people to help the instructor get at and solve the problem. Our program is real special for each child.

Students have a healthier outlook and enjoy school better because they can exceed in these particular areas. Its a funny thing about schools, said Stiefel. Most students automatically go into the next grade at the end of the year, but not all of them are ready. In grades four and five a lot of these handicaps show up. Valley schools now are looking at a new program which might aid in even earlier identification of learning problems by working with preschool children.

In the future, the school would like to transport handicapped pre-schoolers from Valley, Elkhorn, Bennington and Waterloo to get to worn on the problems earlier so the youngsters will be ready for school when they get there. tlwWggest over-CrOppmgs of our whole program la that it makes for a happier said Stiefel. The kids enjoy school and want to participate in activities. We think we have one of the best programs in our portion of the state, he said. Local deputies help capture two escapees Two men who escaped from the Washington County jail in Blair earlier this week were apprehended and returned to Blair with the help of Dodge County Sheriff Department deputies Wednesday. Weaver, 19, Arlington, and Gregory Osburn, 20, Blair, were being held on a vanety of charges including parole violation, failure to appear, bad checks and driving while under the influence of alcoholic liquor, according to Washington County Sheriff Jim Kelley. After escaping, the men stole a car in Blair, Dodge County Chief Deputy Floyd Small said. Deputy Dan Weddle captured Weaver around 12:07 a m. on S. Hwy-J7 south of Uehling.

Small said Weddle stopped Weaver when he recognized the stolen car. Later Wednesday morning, Osburn was found hiding on a farm near Craig Small said. The Nebraska state Patrol, Dodge County Sheriff Richard Wennstedt and a Burt County deputy assisted in the capture, Small said. The pair may nave stolen anbther car in Frepiont, Small added. Kelley said new charges are in the process of being filed against the two.

Russ Donker, south central division sales manager, was assigned to district sales manager of the Chicago district. Donker, a Grand Rapids, native, was district manager in Phoenix, before coming to Fremont. Pernie Jennings will succeed Donker as manager of the Fremont plants south central division. Jennings is district manager in Tampa, and was district manager in Duluth, Minn. Jennings and his wife, Peggy, have three children.

Mrs. Morrow was bom Feb. 14, 1893 in ONeill and had lived in Fremont since 1921. She moved to Fort Dodge 1974. Her husband, James died in 1967.

Mrs. Morrow was a member of the St. Patricks Catholic Church and St. Patrick's Altar Society. Survivors include a son, Bob, Fort Dodge, Iowa; brother, Laurence Barrett, St.

Paul, sister, Mrs. Anna Sullivan, ONeill; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services will 10 a m. Monday at St. Patricks Catholic Church.

Visitation will begin 1 m. Sunday. There will be an Altar Society Rosary Sunday at 3 p.m. and a wake service at 8 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Latin-Dugan-Chambers Funeral Home is in charge of the services. OConner Services for a former Fremont resident, Mrs. Thomas (Norma) OConnor, 46, of Papillion, will begin with a 9:30 a.m. prayer service Monday at Kahler Mortuary in Papillion, followed by a 10 a.m. mass at St.

Columbkille Catholic Church in Papillion. The Rev. Robert Stienhausen will officiate. Mrs. OConnor died Wednesday in an Omaha hospital following a brief illness.

She was born Dec. 26, 1928, in Tekamah. Mrs. OConnor lived in Fremont and North Bend before moving to Papillion a year ago. The former Norma Snyder, she married Thomas J.

OConnor, Dec. 16, 1952, at Omaha. Survivors include her widower; son, Thomas Phoenix, and Fred, at home; daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Marcia) Davey, San Diego, and Caroline and Gloria, at home; and two granddaughters. Rosary will be 7:30 p.m.

Sunday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Fremont. Pallbearers will be Jerald OConnor, Edward Hanzel Jr. John Bendig, Daniel Kunce, and John and Gary Maly. Shanahan Services will be 10 a.m.
